ALOHA 2023 International Competition: A Spectacular Global Showcase of Mental Math in Kuala Lumpur

The vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur came alive on July 30, 2023, as the global stage was set for the highly anticipated ALOHA International Competition. The prestigious event, held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, brought together nearly 700 students from 15 countries and regions (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, China, Croatia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, Philippines, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela), all eager to demonstrate their exceptional mental prowess and abacus computational skills. Following the tremendous success of the 2022 competition in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, this year’s competition marked a special milestone – its 30th Anniversary, promising an even more exhilarating celebration.

The competition kicked off at 11 am with a remarkable display of unity. Founder Mr. Loh Mun Sung and International Director Kiran Motwani hoisted the ALOHA international flag, joined by ALOHA Malaysia’s Ms. Hooi and Ms. Yean, extending a warm welcome to participants from around the world. The stage was set for a dynamic showcase of mental math excellence.

 

In a captivating display, students amazed the audience by performing an astounding 70 operations in just 5 minutes, showcasing their rapid mental calculations and precision. The excitement was not confined to the venue alone; more than 40 countries virtually witnessed this spectacle, emphasizing the global reach and impact of the ALOHA Competition.

As the competition celebrated its 30th Anniversary, the atmosphere was electric. The second part of the event commenced with a traditional lion dance, symbolizing strength, and courage. This was followed by a mesmerizing Malay dance that showcased the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia. The grand finale saw the vibrant “Colors of the World” performance, a testament to the diversity and unity that the ALOHA community embodies.

 

The Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre was not just a venue but a melting pot of cultures, dreams, and aspirations. Distinguished guests, including the representatives of the embassies of Mexico, Uzbekistan, India, Cambodia, and the Philippines, added an air of international collaboration. In a remarkable gesture of support, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia, along with the Malaysia Franchise Association, stood behind the ALOHA International Competition.
